I used to dread traveling with painful periods. Heavy bleeding and debilitating cramps made the thought of sitting for hours terrifying.Period survival kit for travel

Most of us primarily travel for leisure. And your period isn’t usually leisurely if you’re dealing with painful and heavy bleeding caused by fibroids.  In fact, it can be downright anxiety-inducing.

Of course, I share lots of tips on how to have less painful periods. However, working towards a better period takes time.

And if you’re not there yet, that’s ok. In the meantime, you should still be able to do the things you enjoy, like vacation, and leave the anxiety about your period behind.

With some planning and preparation, your trip can run smoothly even while you’re managing fibroid symptoms on your period.

5 Tips for Traveling with Fibroids

  1. Enlist an ally. You’ll likely be traveling with a partner or friends. Communicate your usual symptoms and what that might mean for your travel experience. They may be able to assist you in an uncomfortable situation. Be respectful of that person’s time and energy when letting them know how they can help.
  2. Eat well before your trip. Prevention is better than treatment. Since diet is a factor in period pain, focus on eating a fiber-rich, whole food diet and stay hydrated before your period begins.
  3. Check the itinerary ahead of time. You know your body best, so communicate with your companions about activities that likely won’t work for you. You can also add activities to your itinerary, like yoga or a nap, to help you feel grounded or recharge.
  4. Seize the opportunity for bathroom breaks. Even if you don’t have to go, take advantage of access to restrooms to change or check your pads or tampons to prevent leaks. This is
  5.  especially important if you’re visiting an unfamiliar destination.
  6. Keep an emergency bag. Pack a small case or makeup bag with your period emergency items handy.
