5 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Smoothie
Smoothies are one of my favorite meals because they’re super easy to throw together, and most combos are at least edible even if you get too experimental. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your smoothie:
-
Consider your nutritional needs. Do you need an iron-rich pick me up? Or are you trying to support a certain phase of your cycle? Taking a food as medicine approach can help you strategize packing the most into your smoothie. Some of my favorite smoothie additions are spirulina and the powder from my iron capsule.
-
Invest in a good blender. There’s no need to break the bank. but don’t go super cheap. There are several great blenders under $100. Look for one that has powerful blades that can chunky vegetables and seeds really quickly. My fave is the ninja.
-
Skip the sweeteners. Think about it like this, every fruit or veggie that you use has enough fiber to “burn” its own sugar. This is an oversimplified idea, but you get the picture. I find additional sweeteners to be unnecessary. If you absolutely have to make your smoothie sweeter, try adding dates or more of your sweetest fruit.
-
Always go organic when possible. I know this isn’t always possible or accessible to everyone, but it’s strongly recommended. Pesticides can mimic estrogen in the body. Estrogen dominance has been linked to the growth of uterine fibroids and hormonal imbalance.
-
Meal prep your smoothies. It’s never a bad idea to plan ahead and make smoothie packs to freeze. In the morning, just drop your frozen pack and liquid into the blender and blend.
